Integration of Faith and Learning
|
Integration of Faith and Learning One of the stated purposes of the ACMS is "to encourage Christians in the mathematical sciences to explore the relationship of their faith to their discipline." The ACMS accomplishes this mission in many ways, including biennial conferences (see the conference website for the upcoming 2005 conference), the Journal of the ACMS, and a bibliography (see below). Bibliographies
The
Bibliography of Christianity and Mathematics: 1910-1983, a monumental
effort of ACMS members Gene Chase and Calvin Jongsma, is a sponsored activity of
the ACMS. The bibliography is quite extensive, so you may wish to refer to
the
index to this bibliography. Workshops
The Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) recently sponsored a workshop at Westmont College on integrating faith with mathematics and computer science. Projects completed by participants are located on the conference website. Note to Members from the Webmaster
Many of you may recall that at the 2003 convention I discussed a plan for a website containing specific examples of the integration of faith and learning in mathematics. At that convention (and afterwards) several members of the ACMS board discussed with me their vision for the Journal of the ACMS. Those conversations resulted in the merging of the efforts and my being appointed the next webmaster. The ensuing 15 months has seen much work behind the scenes by the board, especially by the editor of the Journal of the ACMS, Jim Bradley. The posting of the inaugural issue of the journal is the first step in accomplishing these goals.
This effort can fully accomplish the goal I had in mind in 2003 if everyone sends their contributions to the online journal. I plan to submit an item or two to the "educational materials" section of the journal this coming academic year, and I hope that those of you with ideas will write articles for the journal as well. Once such items have been accepted and posted, they can easily be accessed through the cumulative indices of the journal when information on a particular topic is desired. This is the professional way of doing things instead of the individual ad hoc approach I was prepared to pursue last year. Even better, such contributions to the refereed journal serve a better chance of being recognized by deans and tenure committees! Thank you for your patience, and may God bless our efforts.
