Journal of the ACMS 2004 Inaugural Issue
The Historical Shaping of the Foundations of Mathematics This paper introduces the beginnings of ACMS and the motivation for its biennial conferences. It provides a broad historical overview of calculus and geometry. It also sketches issues in 5 areas – truth, axiomatics, the proliferation of new developments, number, infinity – in which ACMS has a stake. While Dr. Brabenec’s thinking on these issues has grown considerably since this article was written, it is posted as presented in 1977 because of its historical importance.
